Recommendations
Transport and Handling
- Handle doors and frames carefully to avoid scratches, dents, or damage to the surface finish.
- Use at least two people for lifting — doors can be heavy.
- Keep units horizontal during transport and well strapped.
- Secure firmly in vehicles with clean, soft padding to prevent rubbing or marking.
- Do not drag or drop; lift using straps, suction cups (for larger units), or proper supports.
Storage
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, rain, or extreme temperatures
- Keep upright or flat on a level surface with protective packaging intact.
- Avoid stacking too high or placing heavy items on top to prevent warping or deformation.
- Do not store near chemicals, solvents, or abrasive materials that could damage the PVC surface.
- Leave protective packing on for as long as practical before installation.
Installation
- Professional installation is strongly recommended for best results, warranty validity, and compliance with building codes.
- Check the door size, handing (left/right swing), and all parts before starting — do not remove old frames until confirmed.
- Ensure the opening is square, level, plumb, and clean; allow a minimum gap (typically 5-10mm) around the frame for adjustments and sealing.
- Use shims to plumb and level the frame; fix securely through the frame into the wall (use appropriate fixings for the substrate).
- Keena recommends at least three hinges per door for stability and weight support.
- Adjust torque settings down on any installation equipment when removing screws. Too much torque will break screws.
- If trimming the door height is needed (e.g., for fit), only trim from the bottom — never excessively from the sides, as this can compromise structure, seals, or reinforcement.
- When measuring door height and fit add 2.5mm top and 2.5mm bottom to accommodate the impact edging pieces (4) supplied in the packaging.
- Install impact edging with small self tapping screws on either edge and apply a small amount of PVC glue on all the fins that make contact with the structural supports within the door.
- See Keenagroup.co.za for more information and helpful videos.
- Install hardware (handles, locks, letterboxes) per manufacturer’s instructions
- Seal all around the frame with compatible sealant (e.g., silicone) for weatherproofing; clean excess immediately with PVC cleaner.
- Adjust hinges and locking mechanisms after installation for smooth operation and proper alignment (doors may need periodic adjustment every few months).
- Test operation before final sealing; ensure no binding or misalignment.
Maintenance
- PVC/uPVC doors are low-maintenance and do not require painting or staining.
- Clean regularly (every 3-6 months or as needed) with mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth — avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or strong chemicals.
- Wipe hardware (hinges, locks) and lightly lubricate moving parts (e.g., with light oil or grease) once a year for smooth operation.
- Inspect seals, hinges, and locks periodically for wear; replace if damaged to maintain weatherproofing and security.
- Avoid slamming; keep clear of heavy impacts.
- For exterior doors, check for water ingress or condensation issues and address promptly.
Following these guidelines helps ensure your PVC doors and frames last many years with reliable performance, good looks, and energy efficiency. If you’re unsure, contact a qualified installer for assistance.
